We used to determine it by how we call in the formation, but now we determine it by the scheme code word. All of our schemes fit within a theme, and the specific code word tells the RB where to align, the QB what side they open to, and both what the footwork is.

Rules are #1 aims at 6yds and sits when he crosses a defender. #2 runs a 15 yard Sail. #3 has the flat route, thay can be an arrow, bubble or a swing from the backfield. QB reads triangle from Sail to Snag to Flat.

We typically try to run it from a condensed look or to the boundary. The other difference we have is the playside crosser (Y) is the over that sets the depth. QB has a triangle read working from the Rail to the OTB, then to the Under Mesh.

We also have the other Air Raid version where #2 runs the stick with a #3 on a flat control route. Which can be a swing, bubble, or arrow.

Our base quick is Fade/Quick out but can change it based on game plan. QB reads the quick concept then progresses to the Cross then to the backside route, which will be a version of a Post or a Dig

We communicate like we would a run where we make combo calls and ID the point LB. We do have a "BoB/5-0" and a full slide call they can make or by game plan. QB keys 1st LB away from the slide and has a "Trouble" route vs a 6th man.

Most importantly it makes sure we're all on the same page and, in my opinion, harder for the defense to decipher all the calls being verbalized.

They'll also add a "Larry, Mike, Rob" to identify a backer they're responsible for or will work combo towards, and might have another call for any adjustments.

The way we made it easy for our kids was to give each formation a one word name. These were paired by with an opposite word for R/L and were themed by the type of formation they were. For us, shifting was as simple as going from one to the other.
