My next highlighted game of Day 2 of the @PrepHoops#UpperMidwestFinals was easily the best battle yet and straight up felt like the Battle of the Bigs. It was a bruising showdown between MN Fury 17U-Sabin and MN Explosive, and from the opening tip, this one had the feeling of an old-fashioned slugfest where neither side was willing to blink first. Every possession carried weight, with every rebound was contested, and every run was answered with another punch.
MN Explosive came out swinging early and established the first bit of control behind physical play and confident shot-making. But Fury never let the game drift away. Every time Explosive tried to create separation, Fury answered right back with toughness, execution, and hustle plays that kept the pressure on. By halftime, MN Explosive held a slim 33-28 lead, but the tension inside the gym already felt like this game was headed for a wild finish.
The second half delivered exactly that. Fury stormed back with a strong run, took the lead, and from that point forward refused to give it back. What made this game special was how tight everything stayed. Neither team could ever create true breathing room as the lead never got past 10 points the entire game. It was clutch bucket after clutch bucket, defensive stops, bodies crashing inside, and players stepping up under pressure.
Even in the closing moments, MN Explosive kept bringing the heat and fighting to the final buzzer, but MN Fury showed poise down the stretch and closed out a gritty 65-58 hard-fought victory.
Fury was led by #13 @Derekxthompson, who put on a strong all-around performance with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block while bringing toughness on both ends of the floor. Teammate #30 @ryan_miskowicz controlled the boards and added 14 points with 10 rebounds in a huge interior presence throughout the battle.
MN Explosive was led by #0 @BlakeBetton, who matched the physicality all game long and finished with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block. Teammate #30 Brandon D’Valle added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and a block while battling inside possession after possession in one of the toughest matchups of the day.
Grateful to Max Wagner and Prep Hoops for the highlight video! Great weekend with the boys and Coach Sabin at the Pentagon. @RyanJamesMN@ShakoBoysHoops
