Communicating a respectful 'no' does not close the door on that coaching staff forever.
We as coaches appreciated the upfront communication so there is no wasted time.
If life happens, and it does, and the recruit wants to re-examine a school or if a coaching staff moves to a new school where the recruit would be more interested in attending, everyone is on a positive ground with which to re-engage.
"Keeping your options open" and ghosting coaches creates distrust and closes more doors than recruits realize.

R3: "Is that a kid fun show?"
Me: "Yes! It was filmed where Daddy grew up"
R3: "UGH! That means its gonna be in Black & White!"
