The last time UNM turned to the FCS ranks for its next head coach things turned out well. Dennis Franchione was hired by New Mexico from then FCS (or 1-AA) Texas State on Dec. 4, 1991. He had compiled a 13-9 record in 2 seasons at Texas State. Franchione was named WAC Coach of the Year just two years later after guiding the Lobos to a winning season in 1993. He was named WAC Coach of the Year again in 1997 after leading UNM to its first bowl game in 36 years. He remains one of just 4 Lobo head coaches to receive conference Coach of the Year honors.

Coach Jason Eck now enters his tenure as Lobo Head Coach after amassing a 26-13 record with 3 FCS playoff appearances as the head coach of the Idaho Vandals.
