Coaching is eclectic!
It shouldn’t eliminate nor disregard. It shouldn’t consign to the bin. There’s no one single way that is correct or perfect or efficacious above all.
There’s no one right way to coach…
Coaching is telling what to do and asking others to figure it out themselves
Coaching is directly instructing and engaging in non-directive instruction such as questioning
Coaching is constraining and affording
Coaching is convergent and divergent
Coaching is having a framework and having a blank template
Coaching is structured and creative…it’s didactic and fluid
Coaching is empirical and experiential
Coaching is stretch and support
Coaching is physical and mental
Coaching can be theoretical and atheoretical
Coaching can embrace holism and reductionism
Coaching is north and south and east and west
Apart from bullying and any kind of ‘ism’ that excludes, all can fit. Everything is possible. Away from maladaptive human interaction and physical abuse there is neither right nor wrong in coaching.
Coaching is a pragmatic profession or hobby guided by a keen mix of context, culture, research, practice, and exploratory thinking. That is a coaches privilege and a coaches burden. That’s what makes it sometimes simple, often difficult, and occasionally the toughest job or hobby out there.
Coaching lies in the grey, so before anyone tells themselves: “this is the way to do it”…stop! Check yourself! There are many ways. There are many methods. You may stumble upon the ‘optimal’ way for your current circumstance, but that (very possibly) doesn’t make it the ‘right’ way…just the best way right now for your context.
