From a scouting perspective, the H back is one of the hardest offensive positions to evaluate because the player must be able to impact the game in several different ways

Coaches and scouts are evaluating football intelligence, toughness, movement skills, blocking ability, route running, versatility, and overall functional athleticism all at once

The best H backs can align all over the formation, process defensive structure quickly, and execute assignments at a high level in both the run and pass game

College and NFL coaches value H backs because they create matchup problems while helping disguise offensive intent. The position requires players who can:

• Move across the formation pre snap

• Execute split zone and wham blocks

• Protect the quarterback in pass protection

• Run routes from the slot, wing, or backfield

• Create leverage angles in the run game

• Contribute on special teams

• Adjust quickly to defensive movement and fronts

Key traits scouts and coaches look for:

• Football IQ and processing speed
• Positional versatility and alignment flexibility
• Ability to block in space and seal edges
• Short area quickness and body control
• Toughness at the point of attack
• Reliable hands and route running ability
• Understanding of leverage and blocking angles
• Ability to handle motion and adjustment responsibilities
• Special teams value
• Competitive toughness and consistency
