The U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) announced today that it has voted to adopt a new standard to make it easier for biomedical companies to use synthetic alternatives to horseshoe crab blood in their safety testing.

A rare, extinct whale from the Atlantic was spotted for the first time in 200 years near Nantucket. The whale was spotted 30 miles south of Nantucket. The whale disappeared from the Atlantic Ocean due in part to whaling.
The best available scientific information demonstrates that listing the horseshoe crab as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act throughout all or a significant portion of its range may be warranted.
