If you are convicted of robbery, the least sentence the court can give is 10 years ( if there was no offensive weapon ) or 15 years ( if they used offensive weapon )

So the court took into account the mitigation factors that was why they got 10 years

The Court of Appeal acquitted him on the basis of miscarriage ( but during NDC’s time )
