Today I met a contractor. After he rang the doorbell, I politely invited him inside to talk. He carried a large tool bag on his shoulder, and I walked him through the inside and outside of the house. Then he took out various
measuring tools and carefully inspected the property for more than ten minutes before coming back inside to discuss the remodeling plans with me.

That was when I suddenly noticed something — his left hand was completely missing. Part of his lower arm was still there, but where his hand should have been, there was only the end of a shortened arm. I was genuinely shocked. The man who had just been moving around so skillfully, measuring carefully, communicating professionally, and working efficiently… was actually disabled.

What struck me even more happened during our conversation. At one point, his pen accidentally fell onto the floor on his left side. Most people would instinctively reach down with their left hand and pick it up without thinking. But I watched him naturally move his right arm across his body, bend down, and pick the pen up from the left side.

There was nothing awkward about the motion. It felt like something he had already done thousands of times before. And in that moment, I felt something difficult to describe. So many small actions that most of us take for granted every day may require someone else to quietly adapt in an entirely different way for years.

Yet from beginning to end, he never complained once, nor showed any sign of self-pity. Sometimes, the people we should admire most are not the ones who were given perfect lives — but the ones who had something taken away from them and still chose to live with dignity.
