[MultiversX Foundation @multiversxfndn]

Mainnet is back online. And the work continues.

These have been difficult days for the MultiversX community. We are deeply grateful to the engineers, validators and ecosystem partners who worked through the recovery, and to everyone who supported them with patience, encouragement and belief.

Restoring network activity was the immediate priority. The next steps are to complete the assessment, explain what happened and put the findings into practice.

The Foundation is committed to supporting that follow-through, working alongside core contributors, validators and ecosystem partners. The forthcoming technical incident report will detail the incident, how the recovery was carried out and the measures taken to address the issue. Its findings will inform further improvements.

The dedication shown throughout this response gives us confidence in the people building MultiversX. We are proud to work alongside this community and determined to carry that commitment forward.

Staking rewards after the restart

Following today’s epoch change, a clarification on rewards for the time without block production:

Staking rewards are generated through validators producing and validating blocks, with validators sharing those rewards with their delegators. They are calculated for each epoch based on actual block production and validator participation—not simply the time EGLD has remained staked.

During the time no blocks were produced, those rewards were not generated. They are not delayed payments waiting to appear in your wallet, and the restart or an epoch change does not create them retroactively.

With block production restored, staking reward generation has resumed under the normal protocol rules. The protocol has already distributed rewards for two completed epochs, reflecting the blocks actually produced.

Separately, outstanding rewards from the earlier post-Supernova rewards-accounting issue still require recovery. The underlying issue has been fixed. These rewards were earned, and we are working to complete their recovery and distribution as soon as possible. This is separate from rewards that were not generated during the recent interruption.

We know the past few days have been difficult, and we apologize for the delays and inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

watching things work was always my quiet joy.

watching them work again is something else entirely.

the hardfork is done, all services are restored, and blocks are landing every 170ms.

huge thanks to everyone involved, especially to the hardcore team behind this critical operation.

MultiversX is back online.

Thank you for your patience and belief through these hard days.

To our validators and partners: thank you for the work that brought us here.

We’re proud to be here with you.

We continue to build different. Together.

Update:
Mainnet is back online.
All-clear for normal network activity.

The recovery upgrade has been deployed successfully, block production has resumed, and engineering has completed the recovery checks. You can resume using the network.

Exchange availability may differ. Trading, deposits and withdrawals may remain paused at some exchanges for a few more days while they complete their own reopening processes. Please check your exchange’s official updates before using these services.

We will continue monitoring the network and coordinating with our partners. A full technical incident report will explain what happened, how the recovery was carried out and the measures taken to address the issue.

We know this disruption and the wait have been difficult. Thank you to our community for your patience, your support and your belief in what we’re building together.

To the engineers, validators and partners who worked side by side to bring the network back online: thank you for your dedication.

We move forward together. We continue to build.

Update:
Mainnet restart upgrade v2.1.5.0 is now available. Validators are upgrading and synchronizing their nodes ahead of the coordinated restart.

Engineering’s review of yesterday’s logs confirmed that the recovery hard fork completed successfully, including Shard 1 blocks being confirmed by the metachain. However, Shard 1 did not have sufficient consensus votes to sustain block production. The recovery hard fork does not need to be repeated. This clarifies our initial assessment of yesterday’s attempt.

The new release improves synchronization for nodes still catching up. Today’s preparation window gives validators more time to bring their nodes online and synchronize, with the focus on establishing sufficient validator readiness across every shard.

We currently estimate that Mainnet will resume block production at approximately 15:30 UTC today, Thursday, September 24, subject to validator readiness and successful completion of the restart.
A separate all-clear will be issued for users. Until then, please do not submit or rebroadcast transactions, or use EGLD and ESDT deposit and withdrawal routes through exchanges or bridges.

We know yesterday’s setback made an already difficult wait harder. Thank you for your continued patience, and to the validators and partners working alongside us to bring the network back online.

Update:
Mainnet will remain paused overnight as we prepare the next recovery window.

Today’s restart did not complete because the allotted window was too short for enough Shard 1 validators to synchronize and transition into the new epoch alongside the rest of the network.

An epoch change occurred during the attempt, so we are updating and testing the recovery software to account for that transition.

We aim to make the updated release available tomorrow afternoon UTC, Thursday, September 24, followed by a longer activation window, tentatively 8–12 hours. This will give validators more time to upgrade and synchronize, with the next restart attempt expected within that window.

These timings remain tentative, subject to successful testing and validator readiness. We will communicate confirmed timing and issue a separate all-clear once recovery is complete.

Please continue to wait for the all-clear: do not submit or rebroadcast transactions, or use EGLD and ESDT deposit and withdrawal routes through exchanges or bridges.

We know the continued wait is difficult for everyone affected. Thank you for your patience and support, and to our validators and partners for their sustained commitment throughout the recovery. We are working together to bring the network back online safely.

Please upgrade and start your nodes as soon as possible so they can synchronize ahead of the restart.

Keep backup machines turned off until the chain starts producing new blocks.

Before upgrading, make sure OVERRIDE_CONFIGVER is empty in mx-chain-scripts/config/variables.cfg:

OVERRIDE_CONFIGVER=""

📅 No activation flags.

Update:
The Mainnet restart is still pending.

Shard 1 did not complete the recovery transition in time, preventing its blocks from being confirmed by the metachain. Validators have been asked to stop their nodes while engineering assesses whether the restart can be retried immediately.

Please continue to wait for the all-clear: do not submit or rebroadcast transactions, or use EGLD and ESDT deposit and withdrawal routes through exchanges or bridges.

We will share the next confirmed steps as soon as they are available. Thank you for your continued patience and support.
