Can you break into tech in your 30s?

For everyone asking me how/where I learned to code:

[Travis Hubbard @wtravishubbard]

If an AI tool like GPT-4 can whip out the HTML for a web app, I question the value in learning HTML/CSS

Particularly if I can take the output and hire someone on upwork for a few hundred $ to enhance it

Your time is better spent learning how to ask better questions

[Mr. B @CodeYourWings]

@LuoBaishun I feel you... from one proud dad to another.

@CoderAmrin Fantastic!

Looking forward to the tutorial.

@ANoorTM Hi👋

When you enjoy what you do

And can do it from anywhere

The line between vacation and work no longer exists

It’s just life

Grab some

[XSGames (by Frank Eno) @xsgames_]

I quit school at 17 and started to work in construction

In 2013 I quit my last job to build my own startup, I was 33

My wife was worried, we had $900 in the bank but still supported my choice

After 10 years, I'm still getting a living as an indie dev

You CAN MAKE IT too!🔥

[Travis Hubbard @wtravishubbard]

Learning HTML and JavaScript syntax gets you ready to start learning to be a developer.

-Learn SQL
-Learn Postman
-Design and create a database with three tables
-Create and API to the DB
-Create a little CRUD front end.

Now go look for a job.

[Nico @nico_jeannen]

The important part is that I failed 30+ projects in 5 years

Only 2 of my projects made me money, so that's something around 5% success rate

Failure sucks, but it's inevitable, and every time, you learn something that will make the next project faster

@CoderAmrin Excellent video, Amrin! Keep going...

I got serious about writing code for the money. That’s the bottom line.

I was 26, broke, no degree, bouncing from job to job hanging out with degens.

I did whatever it took to get a job.

Life is good when you stop giving a shit and focus on you.

Make it happen.

I just sold https://t.co/culXGjg8HN for $65,000 🤩🚀

Launched it 3 months ago, with 0 budget and less than 600 followers. I learned to code only 9 months ago.

Big thanks @agazdecki & @acquiredotcom to have made it possible!

If you're curious, here is the whole story:

December 2022, 20:40. I had a sudden idea. What if I made an app to generate logos using AI?

I was making AI logos already for my other projects, so I knew how to do it. However, I needed to validate 2 hypotheses:

🤔 Can I make logos in an automated way?
🤔 Would people pay for it?

I decided to make an MVP in 48 hours, as deadlines are the way to go when launching anything: https://t.co/XLbPOgAD7Q

48 hours, 1 earthquake and 2 power outages later, I had my crappy MVP ready 🥳

By crappy I mean a static HTML page linked to a Typeform to collect payment. The back end was literally me generating the logos and sending them by email.
No framework, no fancy stuff, just text and pictures.

I made a few posts on Twitter and generated a couple of sales from it: https://t.co/oJWmZapfJ4

Sales = Validation. The next step was to make an automated version, so I made another challenge of making an automated version in 48h and launching it on @ProductHunt 🚀🚀

And oh boy, things went crazy! I launched on December 11 and generated +$1000 of sales, ended up Product of the Day, and got tons of followers on Twitter, so I knew I was into something 🤩

However, it was far from perfect. Lots of logos needed additional editing or ended up weird because the customer inputs/prompts weren't good.

So, I started from scratch again and made a brand new version in January.
The new version offered way more options, and better results overall ✨

Then, I added the app to every startup directory I could put my hand on. And that's how most of my traffic came.

I also kept posting on Twitter, every time someone asked "what are you working on?" I replied with the name of the app, and the same when someone asked for AI-generated logos

And... That's pretty much it. I tried to run some ads on Twitter & Reddit but it didn't work that much, as it's not targeted enough.

Now, I don't have much interest in logo/design, and I don't have the technical skills to improve the app further, so, I decided to sell it in February.

@acquiredotcom made the process pretty easy, I received a few offers, and ended up choosing the best offer. Then I did the transfer and here we are 🥳

In total, the app made +$23,000 in sales and $15,000 in profit. So, that's around $80,000 in total (profit + sale), which is equivalent to at least 5 years of safety net where I live 😱

If you want a more detailed post, I wrote everything I was doing in real-time back then: https://t.co/iEpUio2pDs

Now, keep in mind that it's not my first shot at entrepreneurship.
In the last 5 years, I launched around 35 projects and most were total failures. Just between October and December 2022, I released 7 different apps.

I never gave up. I kept showing up. It's a number game.

The odds are against you, but at some point, you'll get something that sticks 😉

So... What's next? 🤔

I hate customer service. So I hired an assistant to do it on https://t.co/culXGjg8HN. But in most cases, it's the same questions over and over. So I made an app to help my assistant works 2x faster.

Last weekend, I made a post to show it and some people asked for a public app, so I made it.

If you want to join the beta, you can go to https://t.co/iO5YcpP4I2.

For testers, it's $15/month forever instead of +$30 later.

It's also a crappy MVP, there is not even a Stripe integration, I’ll DM users to give them the payment link 😁

And again, thanks to everyone for the massive support I got with MakeLogo along the way. Couldn't have done it without you 🥰

[Mr. B @CodeYourWings]

@nico_jeannen @agazdecki @acquiredotcom Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!

Have been following your journey closely throughout.
