It's less a matter of stupidity and more of a risk judgement. If Putin thinks Ukraine would become a NATO member. (They were being trained by NATO before the recent invasion) And that NATO would then place assets which would risk Russia's access to the black sea. Then Russia is going to play that chessboard and make sure that this doesn't happen if they thought they could.

Biden bungled Afghanistan by postponing the withdrawal against the terms of the deal and then removed the soldiers before the bureaucrats leading to the disaster that followed. (the postponing allowed for the rebels to gather support since the west was violating the deal and the withdrawal happened during "fighting season" as opposed to the spring as was intended) This signaled weakness which Russia interpreted as a sign that they could force Ukraine to either be a neutral buffer state again or even a part of Russia again.

Russia initially just wanted NATO to be kicked out and Ukraine to consent to being a neutral buffer state. Boris then told Ukraine to throw out the deal they made since the west would defend them which caused the 3-day operation to become the multi-year war we got instead. And of course now Russia has more ambitions since they want to justify the sunk cost that has happened.

@adammocklerr Without checking the issue would likely be what the terms are. If for example Grok would be liable for something slipping past the safety harness instead of the prompter then obviously XAI would object.
