Don Wemple (right) was killed in action in June 1943 when his transport was damaged by enemy fire traveling from India to China. He spoke his last words to his Colgate football co-captain John Lucy: “I’m all right now, coach, put me back in the game.”
Michael Joseph Hayes was killed in action Oct. 14, 1918 in Saint-Juvin, France. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for multiple acts of valor and is buried in

Jack Clifford was killed in action on August 24, 1944 while serving in France. Andy Kerr said this about him: “I can’t tell you what I’d have given to see that boy come back alive and well. And I wouldn’t have cared if he never played football again.”
