@B_HQ If there’s an exception I think it might be Hungary. (Don’t know enough to be sure.) Interesting that RS (who doubtless spoke Hungarian) was wary of Orban—not quite “our” way—although not condemnatory. The EU hates him … which only makes me think there may be something there.
@B_HQ Yeah. True throughout the West I think. Maybe it serves us right for priding ourselves on our political order. Maybe it WAS what we thought once—but not for some time now. And the US is perhaps worst—doubly ironic given the chauvinism around “American exceptionalism”. Arizona 😂
@DrSeanOMara If it—& 2 or 3 other species—have the roles Dr Davis thinks—including protecting upper GI tract from bacteria that belong further down—then I guess low carb diets, much as I like ‘em, really aren’t enough for health by themselves. Tricky: since re-colonization doesn’t seem easy
@DrSeanOMara Well, I think it turned up whenever they looked at the time. I guess that’s not proof of ubiquity. But I did recently see a sequencing of bacteria recovered from what seemed to be a latrine area at a Neanderthal site and it was even there.
@B_HQ And probably it galls more than it might, because you are philosophically conservative. Some of the sternest critics of errant “leaders” are those who thought, or were told, they were their own. Betrayal. C.f. the fury against Kevin McCarthy in the US.
@JOEBOTxyz It’s good, isn’t it? Others may use somewhat different language, but the analysis is spot on. It’s a *soteriological* promise: it offers paradise re-imagined as a future entirely this-worldly state. Like Marxism-Leninism it could probably only have arisen in a Christian culture.
@MaajidNawaz He himself related once that tasked with answering letters from the public to Mrs Thatcher he wrote a very hostile response to one. He said she said when she found out: “Matthew, how could you?” I suppose he’s not changed. The public doesn’t even merit courtesy let alone rights.
@TristanHaggard I think one has to begin to suspect that “philanthropists” are aware that people need animal foods for health—and fertility. It wouldn’t suit the Malthusians for us to enjoy either—if there were any, which of course there couldn’t possibly be.
@ArchbpVigano No faithful Christian (or Jew) can like what’s going on. And I’d hazard a guess many of other faiths and many agnostics are disturbed by much of it, too. It’s a problem: and look at what happened in Arizona when the electorate tried to right these wrongs.
@robinmonotti According to theology, even the Almighty allows us our choices (a persistent theme in C. S. Lewis’s fiction). Governments see themselves as gods in their own eyes now, though—not to mention billionaires.
@VinnieTortorich Criticizing Coke is “racist” 😂. Racism is the standard accusation to leverage nowadays. In medieval times it was “sodomy & witchcraft”. Philip IV accused the Templars of that when he wanted their wealth. When the Pope crossed him he accused him of it.

@VinnieTortorich On a serious note, turns out the latest science shows the physiological effects of alcohol are worse than thought, and the best strategy is either none or “occasional”. Even “moderate” has consequences. So the Vinnie approach is spot on.
