Sarah Carey, writing in today’s Independent exposes how the strategy on women omits the word “mother.”

Don’t be fooled by this sleight of hand. The word “mother” offends a certain type of man who “identifies as a woman.”

The medical council and the safeguarding system in Ireland has serious questions to answer following the conviction of Dr. Muhammad Iqbal.

Despite being under investigation and subsequently charged for sexually assaulting female patients in the UK, Dr. Iqbal was allowed to continue practicing in Ireland. He was employed at St. Michael’s House in Dublin, a facility providing care to adults and children with intellectual disabilities with the sole condition from the Irish Medical Council that he be chaperoned when seeing female patients.

The UK Conviction: Dr. Iqbal was sentenced to 18 months in prison in the UK for sexually assaulting two female patients during medical examinations in 2021.

Regulatory Oversight: The Irish Medical Council permitted him to remain on the register and continue practicing under restrictions while criminal allegations were ongoing. His registration was only suspended after his criminal conviction and imprisonment.

Employment in Vulnerable Care: St. Michael's House confirmed he worked at their facility while under investigation, ending his employment only after his conviction was finalized.

Relying on internal reviews by individual service providers is insufficient. A full, independent investigation is urgently required to examine how cross-border disciplinary and criminal information is acted upon, and why a practitioner facing such severe allegations was permitted to work with vulnerable populations.

The regional impact is severe, with Dublin and the Midlands hit hardest, accounting for over 8,100 of the total cases.
Between April and July, a shocking 9% of assessments were completed within the legal timeframes set out by the Disability Act 2005. Despite thousands of families applying for support this year, persistent job vacancies within health services continue to stall crucial early interventions. Families deserve better transparency and immediate action to ensure no child is left behind without vital support.
