The Very Terrible Drowning of Bryan Price tells the story of Kate Barkway, a middle-aged wife and mother living in an idyllic West Michigan town. While her supervisor is on leave, Kate is in charge of the city’s annual triathlon, and everything is running smoothly… until a body is pulled from the waters of Reeds Lake. That body belongs to Bryan Price—Kate’s ex-husband. In the wake of the tragedy, questions arise about Kate’s role in Bryan’s drowning. No one has more questions than Madalynn—Bryan’s pregnant wife. PRAISE FOR The Very Terrible Drowning of Bryan Price, A Novella by Colleen Alles
Alles’s novella is a lean, fast-paced tale of protestations of innocence, and the secrets those claims conceal. The protagonist Kate is a sympathetic narrator throughout, but who the reader can’t help but think is holding something back. Alles’s characters are convincingly, pulsingly, alive, as are the circumstances around the book’s central tragedy. One holds one’s breath on every page.

YEAR IN BOOKS on X:
10. "Jane Eyre" set in modern-day American high school? Yes, please! I snagged this ARC by @ColleenAlles via @PublishConquest as soon as I saw it. I never realized how much of a ladies man Mr. Rochester was until I saw him in a high school setting.
My debut NA fantasy novel has a cover - and I love it! @WildInkPub totally outdid themselves, and I can’t wait to share this book with the world on Aug. 12!
I’m a sucker for retellings, and this is a fun YA version of Jane Eyre with plenty of nods to the original without trying too hard to stick to the script. The characters are likable and believable as modern high school students. All in all, a delightful gem of a YA novel.
“EDDIE ROCHESTER IS THE HOUND OF THORNFIELD HIGH.”
Boy is he ever! What a delightful gem of a YA Jane Eyre remix this is. Thanks, @ColleenAlles and @PublishConquest !
All right everyone... the time has come...
