he Alberta government has removed furbearer trapping limits for the 2024-25 season in most zones, including for at-risk wolverines. https://t.co/qPeYmIFgkM
These contests involve the indiscriminate killing of #animals over a specified time and conducted with the aim of reducing predator populations without regard for population/ecosystem dynamics, ecological impact, or intrinsic value of individual animals. https://t.co/m37HiZXLJr
Happy #InternationalWolfDay!
This is one of my favourite essays from @raincoast large carnivore expert Paul Paquet about our relationship with #wolves.

The wildlife team consistently pushed for "transparent, fact-based media lines released to reflect the conclusion of our investigation as soon as possible" after determining the Feb. 12 cougar attack never happened. https://t.co/VXI3aozInB
Fantastic article. Many great statements including: "this wrong-headed decision was made behind closed doors by people who apparently fear public debate as much as they fear bears. Alberta’s grizzlies, and people, deserve better" ~ /via @globeandmail https://t.co/1GV3AinuBY
Canmore, Alberta wildlife and nature photographer @JohnEMarriott reflects on how animals, such as bears and wolves, could be faring in the midst of the Jasper fire, and shares some of his most memorable photos.

We are deeply saddened by devastating reports from the ongoing wildfire that has spread to the townsite of Jasper, Alberta. Our thoughts are with the people of Jasper. The town and park hold a special place in the hearts of Canadians and people from around the world.
Our hearts go out to all the people and animals who are being impacted by wildfire. Thank you to the firefighters, first responders and anyone who is trying to help. #heartbreaking

While the new grizzly bear non-hunt is complicated, what's crystal clear is that @dtloewen isn't basing these new regulations on data, expert opinion, or government documents. What's he basing it on? Your guess is as good as mine.. https://t.co/3Y6ObQXReI
EDITORIAL: The return of a measure of grizzly bear hunt – particularly without public consultation – is the latest failing of the provincial government when it comes to managing wildlife. https://t.co/0U88nwuPs9
@JohnEMarriott And where is the number of 15 grizzlies a year coming from? There is no way 15 grizzlies are being killed every year by F&W due to conflicts?
Minister Loewen says the amendments don't change anything and that it's not a hunt. But yet he just admitted that "the public wildlife management responders" will be able to keep the bears they kill... How is this not a trophy hunt?!?!

A terrible decision, riddled with perverse incentives for hunters and rife with possibilities to corrupt the system for granting hunting permits.
There is no way any wildlife biologist or conservation expert recommended this hare-brained scheme for grizzly management.
They might not be calling it a "hunt", but recent moves by @dtloewen allow for public killing of bears. This won't resolve conflict. It will result in more dead bears. There is no data to support this and it goes against the Provincial Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan.
