When Albert Einstein met Charlie Chaplin in 1931, Einstein said, "What I admire most about your art is its universality. You do not say a word, and yet the world understands you." "It's true." Replied Chaplin, "But your fame is even greater. The world admires you, when no one understands you."
We continue to face an onslaught of attacks against education by the Governor and his allies. The absence of this AP offering will displace thousands of students this upcoming school year, and will negatively impact our schools’ funding and teachers’ income.
It was so cool to find a single outcrop that shows the entire geologic story from this region of Maine. Sediments, cooked by an intruding pluton, then cut by dikes from a moving hotspot. Thanks for being my class on this field trip!

Got some announcements coming this week!
However, new zircon dates along the Monteregian Hills and the White Mountain Magma Series from @LamontEarth geologist Sean Kinney (2021) show a nice suit of progressively younger ages. This is the type of pattern you'd expect from a hotspot.
Some think that Cretaceous magmatism in New England was driven by something called "edge driven mantle convection." Even at the present day, the mantle beneath NE is warm and buoyant. Check out this figure from @LamontEarth geophysicist Bill Menke (2016) (2/3)
Some of New England's most impressive mountains were made by a hotspot, magma sourced deep from within earth's interior that produces volcanism. The earth's crust slides over the hotspot, leaving geologic evidence of the crusts movement through time.
An octahedron is a polyhedron with 8 sides, and it looks like two four-sided pyramids stacked with their bottoms together. Other common minerals with this shape are diamond, fluorite, and magnetite. Alert!
I mixed up the name of this mineral 🤦 it's Franklinite, not Willemite.
These minerals are so incredible! Not only do they fluoresce, but some of the mineral species found in Franklin can't be found anywhere else in the world.
Thanks for the camera work this past weekend and the inspiration for the groovy sounds @aidan.m.starr
I had an awesome time visiting the mining museum at Sterling Hill. Tune in on Thursday for the full breakdown on these rocks.
Anyone else think this looks like a forbidden cosmic brownie?
In anticipation of the release of our Regular Admission decisions later this afternoon, we wanted to share with you our admitted student profile for the Class of 2027.
