"Christian community is not an ideal we have to realize, but rather a reality created by God in Christ in which we may participate." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together
Steve Gaines:
I shared this story a while back but want to again. I took some college students who were interested in ministry over to Jacksonville for the old FBC Pastor’s Conference. I saw Steve Gaines was going to be speaking and reached out to him to see if he could meet with them and do a Q&A. He only had a 7am breakfast available. We left before 5am to make it from Tallahassee. Very quickly after we sat down with him he realized he lost his prayer cards and was really upset about it. They meant a lot to him. He prayed through them several times a day. He had to abruptly leave about 5 minutes in to try and find them. We drove from Tallahassee at 5am just so the students could meet with him! Breakfast was off. He called me later that day and apologized (we weren’t upset and understood) and that he was going to fly down to Tallahassee the following week on whatever day we said, to buy the guys pizza and talk as long as they wanted. I told him that was very kind but completely unnecessary, but he INSISTED. About 5 days later he was sitting in our church building with 7 or 8 college students talking life and ministry for several hours. He didn’t post about it, wouldn’t let us pay for his hotel, or pay for anything, brought pizza, and gave those guys and myself a memorable night of conversation. All completely under the radar.
Who does that? Steve Gaines. Rest in Christ.
We kicked off 2026 with 11 baptisms and a sweet morning of worship in song and the study of Romans 12:1-2, "Altar Your Life to Alter Your Life."

Merry Christmas from @_faithnc Discipleship Team! We had a great time celebrating the end of the year this past week. I look forward to seeing God continue to use these leaders in 2026.
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered because of the word of God and the testimony they had given. They cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, the one who is holy and true, how long until you judge those who live on the earth and avenge our blood?”
This project has been years in the making. So grateful to have pastored two churches over the past 26 years that continue to pursue renewal! And always enjoy working with @MattCapps!
Coming in April 2026 with @BHAcademic
Yesterday, we laid to rest my friend and our brother in Christ, Terry “Hulk Hogan” Bollea.
At the request of his family, the service was private—an intimate, off-camera time to remember the man we loved. While the world knew him as a larger-than-life figure, I knew him simply as Terry—a humble, joyful, Jesus-loving man whose life was transformed by the grace of God.
Although the funeral was private, we wanted to share a video that was shown at his celebration of life service. This video tells the side of Terry that I’m grateful to know personally, fully surrendered to Jesus Christ. At the end, you’ll hear him pray for YOU—for every person who hears the sound of his voice—to pursue salvation.
If that’s something you've been longing for, don’t wait. Reach out to me directly or find a local, Bible-believing church. Jesus offers the same grace and new life to you that He gave to Terry.
Terry wasn’t perfect, none of us are, but he was changed by the Gospel. He walked closely with our church family, growing in faith and always pointing others to the hope he found in Jesus, wearing his John 3:16 shirt with a verse he lived by:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
That promise wasn’t just for Terry—it’s for anyone. The same hope, forgiveness, and eternal life Terry believed in is available to all who trust in Jesus.
I miss him deeply. But I know this: because of Jesus, Terry is more alive now than ever—fully healed, fully free, and in the presence of his Savior.
As I wrestle with Haggai 1, Dr. Shaddix's question rings in my ears.
He taught me a valuable lesson: to point to God's work among our neighbors and the nations in every sermon.
Jesus' parting words should ever be on our minds.
Last year, I had the special opportunity to sit with Dr. Jim Shaddix and discuss a sermon I was preparing for our church, @_faithnc.
After walking through the outline and text, he asked a simple question: "Where is God's mission?" I had missed it!

I had a blast hanging out with my dad and seeing so many friends at #SBC25. Tex-Mex and BBQ every day. It’s great to be a Texan and a Southern Baptist!
