Heading home after a succesful tournament with students winning awards in multiple events! This year's novice group is off to a great start, and their future--and that of CHS Speech and Debate--looks bright! Full list of awards to follow soon!
Our season continues with 30 novice competitors @ the Vestavia Hills Novice season opener in Birmingham (AL). Ten varsity students have volunteered to serve as judges and peer mentors today to help our newest team members as they continue to learn the ropes of speech and debate!
We started the 2019-2020 season today @ Houston County HS w/ a team record 72 students! Together. They earned the top sweepstakes award for best team across all events! Full list of awards & state bids to come later, but we're bringing home the bear for the 3rd consecutive year!

Thanks to @CHSAlumAssoc, these four students are representing CHS at the Tournament of Champions in Lexington this weekend! Kiko is a three-time OO qualifier, Mariah/Noor are our fourth PF qualifiers in four years, and Aidan is the first extemp qualifier in school history!
We are also proud of Mariah Cady, who was selected as the Student of the Year for the Georgia Southern Peach District, and alum David Smith for being awarded District Communicator of the Year!
We had a great weekend at Districts, leaving with national qualifiers in Informative Speaking, Congress (House), US Extemp, Duo (1st qualifiers in school history!), International Extemp, Public Forum, and Lincoln-Douglas (1st in school history!) We are also 1st alternate in OO!
We had a successful weekend at the Varsity State Championship in Valdosta! In PF, Lilli/Chad finished 9th and Sophie/Noor are 3rd in State! Blake finishes 9th in LD! In Speech, Aidan semifinals in Extemp and Nicki is the top-ranked 1st-Year in Impromptu - Novice State Champion!
Fun facts: Columbus has won a state championship in at least one division every year since 2015.

Columbus won NPF State in 2016, 2018, and 2019.
We had a great weekend of debate and team bonding at the JV/Novice State Tournament! Katelynn places 3rd in JVLD, Owen/Jonathan (3rd speaker) are quarterfinalists in NPF, and Henry (9th speaker)/Evan (5th speaker) are the 2019 Novice Public Forum STATE CHAMPIONS!
Mariah, Noor, and Kiko are judging this weekend - and we also look forward to reconnecting with alumni Sam ('17), David ('16), and Gwyn ('18), who are coming back to judge as well!
State: The Lincoln-Douglas contingent includes Eva (EC) in the novice division and Katelynn (KH), Blake (BH), and Jessica (JP) in JV. Jae and Haritha will be judging and peer coaching!
