Israel is now a punching bag for cynical Labour MPs to shore up their Muslim vote.
It's that simple.
If they didn't have a Muslim vote they would be saying something different and both Muslims and Jews shouldn't be fooled by this ethnopolitics triangulation.
It's disgusting.
Quite apart from Euan's perfectly good point, I think most of the UK would like PM who actually focuses the UK rather than deploying his expertise as Mayor of Manchester to pontificate about the finer points of the Middle East. I know this is a middle class obsession, but still.
British Jews — the man about to become your Prime Minister just showed you his hand. And it is nothing short of disastrous.
@andyburnham dropped a video “apology” today for Labour not being tough enough on Israel from the start.
He’s sorry the UK was “too slow” to demand ceasefire and he’s “appalled” by Gaza’s destruction. He sees “increasing evidence that war crimes appear to have been committed.”
Burnham wants more sanctions, a ban on trade with “illegal settlements,” and extra pressure on Israel to “adhere to international law.”
What he barely mentions — and what the British public is clearly not supposed to dwell on is that Hamas started this war with the deliberate massacre of 1,200 Jews on October 7. Not a word about Hamas embedding its military infrastructure under hospitals, schools and civilian homes and using its own population as human shields — a war crime under international law.
For Israel, having Hamas-run Gaza as a neighbor is not “occupation.” It is living next door to a serial killer who has already slaughtered some of your family and has sworn, repeatedly, to finish the job.
Starmer was bad enough for Jewish safety in this country. Burnham is signalling he will be worse — more one-sided, more performative “balance,” more appeasement of the forces that have driven record antisemitic hate crimes since October 7.
When the next Prime Minister rewrites the story so that the only democracy defending itself against genocidal jihadists is the one that must be sanctioned and shamed, while the actual war criminals get a free moral pass, the message to every antisemite on Britain’s streets is crystal clear.
This isn’t the leadership that Burnham and his press team believe is demonstrated in this video clip. It is instead moral cowardice dressed up as scripted statesmanship.
British Jews are not going back to being polite victims. Not now. Not ever.

Yeah well Burnham pitching for the Green vote has gone down brilliantly with British Jews
Unsurprisingly. Burnham pays lip service to condemning Hamas but only one government is the target of his real scorn. The Israeli one.
Pretty cheap way to win Green Islamist votes
Is this @andyburnham saying that Israel should not have fought back against the genocidal terrorist organization that invaded slaughtering over 1,000 innocent people and taking over 200 hostage?
Calling for a ceasefire at that moment would've been the wrong thing to do.
Here's an idea: Instead of Sanctioning Israel, perhaps consider sanctioning the government paying stipends to the families of people who kill Jews.
INCENTIVIZE PEACE, instead of encouraging the continual cycle of killing Jews and crying when Jews fight back.
Powerful words from Lord Stuart Polak today in @UKHouseofLords on the "sinister" boycott of Jewish actors & creatives.
"Criticisms of a government must never justify the exclusion of an individual because they're Jewish. Jewish identity itself is increasingly treated as politically contentious regardless of what the work is."
Predictably pro-Pals are cross with Sadiq Khan for going to the Nova Exhibition and showing basic compassion for the victims of Hamas. These ppl don’t want a single shred of empathy to be shown to the raped, maimed and murdered. Twisted.
Rule breakers should not be allowed in govt. Whether that individual is tory, snp, reform, the greens, or labour, parties should be quick to eject rule breakers from their ranks. Keeping them is a clear signal they don’t care about the rules they expect the rest of us to follow
The MP at the centre of Andy Burnham's Westminster comeback reveals she's been planning it with him for a year.
Former transport secretary Louise Haigh tells @BBCNickRobinson's Political Thinking that Burnham's team has a plan for the first 100 days.

Our parliamentarians spend more time discussing Israel/ Palestine - a conflict they have no power over than the NHS.
There is something skewed in our Parliamentary system where it’s easier to say, ‘look over there at what those evil Zionists are doing’ than, ‘ooops our economy is shite, the NHS is in the doldrums, our schools can’t stay open in the heat and we have millions living on benefits.’
Pro-Pals are blocking a weapons factory in Berlin and police just arrest and remove them. Not difficult is it? Yet our forces embarrassingly can’t manage at all.
@andyburnham So predictable. Chasing the Islamist vote.
As Israel defended itself against terrorists - here comes Burnham -apologising that the alabour party didnt bash the world's only Jewish state hard enough...
The day will come they will be ashamed of this statement.
From the deck of a Taiwanese coast guard vessel, the Strait looks calm. It is anything but.
If conflict comes to Taiwan, it comes for all of us: an estimated $10 trillion blow to the world economy - dwarfing COVID and the financial crisis - and the chips that power modern life gone overnight.
Nobody gets to sit this one out. Deterrence is cheaper than war, and it starts with having the courage to stand our ground.
So much is at stake.
