@like_poor_tuco@bboesen@MeriwetherFarms I'm just not sure the "enjoy it" part follows from the rest of the comment. It could have stopped at "quit bitching" and everyone would be better off
Why would you want them to enjoy it when it wouldn't make much difference to you anyway?
@JezziiB Neither is your enemy. Your enemy is people like your neighbors voting to restrict zoning and decreasing the supply of land and space, driving prices higher because they want to "preserve character" of the neighborhood and want their house to go up in value.
@ronrule@Rabadash2 It's not made up. Also, poor people can also have unrealized gains.
If you bought a few shares of Google and it went up 20%, are you supposed to pay taxes on that even before you sell and realize the gains?
What happens if you take a loss? Get your taxes back?
@KhaliliJon61822@mnolangray Yes, I think we agree that it's like leasing the land from the government.
I wouldn't call it a scam, though. It's just another cost of ownership (similar to sales tax, notwithstanding the one-time nature) and why I'm not a proponent of homeownership. Too many costs.
@KhaliliJon61822@mnolangray Sales tax is paying to own something too, but no one talks about that
At least paying tax for the land makes sense since you're paying for the privilege of owning a physical part of the country
