With Zohran Mamdani’s big win in NY, more Americans are embracing the word "socialism".
But communism? Still feared. Still misunderstood.

This week, the very foundations of New York's City Hall shook as Zohran Mamdani, a self-professed Democratic Socialist and immigrant son of Queens, beat disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo in the primary for mayor. Cuomo, armed with nearly $26 million in Super PAC money, seemed a sure thing for the establishment, but the voters' rebuke on election night was so powerful that Cuomo conceded before all of the votes were counted, and is even considering dropping out of the general election in November.

But the general enthusiasm is tempered by experience: India Walton's campaign in Buffalo, and the recent New Jersey primaries for example. MAGA is coming hard for progressive mayors of color.
