The video herein revealed a truth that makes sense, although I had never looked at it from this angle.

I had often asked myself why #Rwanda-n institutions and leaders lie as naturally as they breathe, to the point that it has become a national culture. The observation made by the lady in the video, Steffi Metz, may have been based on her personal experience or circumstances. Nevertheless, what she came to understand contains a profound philosophical truth.

When you lie, the first person you lie to is yourself. Then you need another lie to protect the first, and another to protect the second, until the lies accumulate and eventually become bigger than the truth itself.

This is how it began in 1990. And the second lie came in 1994, with the downing of the presidential jet, creating the conditions for an unprecedented interethnic catastrophe. If the first narrative had to be protected at all costs, each subsequent narrative would inevitably require another to sustain it.

Decades later, the question that remains is how long can a political narrative survive when it requires ever more lies to protect what came before it?

Eventually, the truth has always a way of catching up. But this explains how the region ended up here, in an imbroglio of lies. It also explains how lying became a national culture.

But I like how, when it comes to other people’s business, your eyes are always wide open. Yet when it comes to your fellow friends in CNDD, you suddenly see nothing five years without fuel, and you still keep making empty promises.
