India has recently been growing at roughly 5–5.5% in dollar terms. To go from around $4 trillion today to a $30 trillion economy by 2047, we need roughly 10% growth in dollar terms every single year for the next two decades.

That is a massive gap to bridge.

And the most important point is that spreadsheet calculations will not take us to $30 trillion. A credible economic pathway capable of delivering ~10% annual dollar growth might.

At the moment, I struggle to see a credible pathway even to sustained 7–8% growth in dollar terms, forget 10%.

I really don’t see any way the current trajectory of productivity gains, manufacturing expansion, export growth and currency dynamics gets us there. Manufacturing, for example, is still hovering around 16–17% of GDP against the ambition of taking it to 25% which was targeted many years earlier.

And merely assembling imported components is not the manufacturing depth we need. The real game is domestic value addition, components, supply chains, design, R&D and eventually capital equipment.

Ambition is necessary. But ambition without a credible pathway is just a target on a spreadsheet.
