#IWD2025
International Women's Day provides a momentous opportunity to honour the courage and determination of women who have positively impacted their communities and nations. It is not not enough to only celebrate but also reimagine inclusion, recognizing the role and contribution of everyone towards a safe society.
This year's theme: “Accelerate Action for ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment." is a continued call for deliberate action to end existential barriers that perpetuate inequality, including the violation of women and girls' rights.
Join us in @HomaBayCountyKE for #IWD2025 celebrations.
Nairobi continues to bolster its position as a financial and diplomatic powerhouse in Africa, attracting global attention with its strong financial infrastructure, international connectivity, and a high concentration of multilateral institutions.
In a productive meeting with Mr. @volker_turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on the margins of the ongoing high-level segment of the 58th Session Human Rights Council in Geneva, I highlighted Nairobi’s pivotal role in diplomacy. With one of the highest densities of embassies and international organizations on the continent, the city has rightfully earned its reputation as a “peace capital,” hosting key regional summits and mediation efforts.
The UN’s decision to establish a Multi-Country Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nairobi further reinforces the city’s status as a hub for international cooperation. This initiative, only the second of its kind, enhances efficiency in delivering coordinated development programs across multiple nations.
By hosting this office, Kenya strengthens its leadership in promoting and protecting human rights, both at home and across the region. This aligns with our constitutional and international commitments, advancing collaborations with institutions like the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to fortify our human rights framework and foster a more just and inclusive society.
Despite global challenges in safeguarding human rights, Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to dignity, justice, and fundamental freedoms. Our proactive leadership continues to shape a stronger, more resilient human rights ecosystem in Africa.
We salute the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the @_AfricanUnion for adopting the #AUEVAWGConvention , a legally binding instrument to address the root causes of #VAWG in Africa. #AUEVAWGConvention is indeed a victory for women & girls.
#SRHR is key to gender equality. Women must have the right to make choices about their bodies, access family planning & receive quality maternal healthcare. Denying SRHR is denying women's rights. Women must decide their futures.
