✍️ Disability benefits are a lifeline. They help to counteract the massive extra costs that disabled people face.
They aren't "perverse incentives that drive people into welfare dependency" ❌
Slashing benefits to meet an arbitrary fiscal target would be unethical, short sighted and illogical. ❌
2 in 5 people receiving disability benefits already experience hardship – meaning they are either unable to afford enough food, heat their home or pay household bills. 1/3

It’s Men’s Health Week, remember this 🩵
Men,
It’s okay to cry.
It’s okay to show emotion.
It’s okay to be emotional.
It’s okay to feel sad.
It’s okay to be okay.
It’s okay to not be okay.
It’s okay to feel.
It’s okay to grieve.
It’s okay to tell someone you’re struggling.
It’s okay to talk.
It’s okay to struggle.
It’s okay to fail.
It’s okay to feel lost.
It’s okay to talk about your mental health.

Targeting resources towards needs, directs funds towards professionals, institutions & programs; not towards communities. The perverse reality of most helping institutions is that they need people’s needs, not their collective power, solidarity or assets. #RekindlingDemocracy

At the end of the day, they were all eager to build a network of community empowerment groups together to speak #TruthToPower
@CormacRussell Often within traditional volunteering structures there's a hierarchy that doesn't exist in horizontal structures of community helping & giving, because of this hierarchy there is also sometimes status that is being sought. It can significantly shift the impact, energy & outcomes
@CormacRussell Theres so much in this, giving help is a beautiful thing but often dignity can be lost, the mutuality in communities coming together is the opposite and empowers people & can give a sense of pride to all involved
@CormacRussell What a wonderful post @CormacRussell it's hugely important to recognise this difference & to resource & value the actions that communities are taking to support each other. Building community power & self sustaining communities that have autonomy & choice over the things they do
