New blog in Nature Microbiology Community: Behind the paper: “Potential health and economic impacts of dexamethasone treatment for patients with COVID-19” https://t.co/CQYZ06zqis
Vaccines dominate the headlines but the significance of this cost-effective option for the management of severe COVID-10 patients and its potential to save lives is key. New research by @rimashretta@rjaaguas@lisawhite1000@PeterHorby@MartinLandray
2/3 NEW study by @ComoConsortium researchers in Nature Comms https://t.co/TjjDlUduPE estimates the potential number of lives saved and life-years gained if this treatment were to be rolled out in the UK and globally, as well as the cost-effectiveness of this intervention.
1/3 In June 2020, the #recoverytrial a large, multicenter, randomized, open-label trial performed in the UK reported that dexamethasone administered for 10 days reduced mortality in hospitalised COVID-19 patients needing oxygen and ventilation by 18% and 36%, respectively.
A widely used drug for many years that has played a major role in decreasing COVID-19 mortality recently and is incredibly cost effective. Unfortunately was not recommended for use earlier in th the pandemic. https://t.co/gh25ztXyV2

New paper in @GlobalHealthBMJ by @rimashretta@lisawhite1000@rjaaguas shows how participatory modelling approaches, with in-country experts playing an essential iterative policy-facing role, facilitates decision making to curb #COVID19 https://t.co/BR059F2ovs
The UK lockdown is estimated to cost GBP 18b a month. The insights of economics could have helped and would be essential in any future pandemic. https://t.co/y5iRXvH5xT via @iealondon
Much to be optimistic about Covid-19 vaccines. Roll-out programs should include increased monitoring, including regular testing of vaccinees to look for asymptomatic infections. See our blog; @CGDev@NDMOxford@kchalkidou@lisawhite1000
