The research project IntraComp @SocSciHelsinki studies electoral competition within parties; who becomes elected and why? We are funded by @SuomenAkatemia

The idea for a Joint Sessions WS was launched at the kick-off seminar of @CompIntra in October 2018, Helsinki. My participation in that project was the most enriching experience of my time as a postdoc, hands down. This publication also marks the end of a challenging time 5/
This new special issue in Party Politics offers a unique contribution to the field of intra-party competition! Thanks for all your hard work @gertjanput & @CoffeHilde who also contributed to making the @CompIntra project a success. I am so grateful to have you both in my network!
Our project memebers @asa_vonschoultz @CoffeHilde and @ThHelimaki with a blog post about the gendered ways of campaigning in Finland #vaalit - men campaign more negatively compared to women candidates, at least in the 2019 elections.
New on the blog: Research by @CoffeHilde (@Polis_Bath), @ThHelimaki and @asa_vonschoultz (@SocSciHelsinki) suggests that political campaigning is still gendered – even in countries with high levels of gender equality, such as Finland.

New publication out @ElectoralStdies with @UNamur and @UCLouvain_be colleagues @JeremyDodeigne & Ferdinand Teuber.
We webscraped ~ 500k preference vote scores in Belgium and find that intraparty competition is comparatively lower in urban contexts

Ideology vs PVEAs - when do they matter? We show that party list composition is the key - when there are less recognisable candidates, ideology matters.

I have, together with fantastic colleagues decided to play the national research lottery @SuomenAkatemia. And would you belive it, we submitted five hours before the deadline! This must be a new personal record! @SocSciHelsinki@helsinkiuni@CompIntra
New study published in Parliamentary Affairs with colleagues @Gaspar_UGent. Using data on members of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives during six terms, we investigated whether their parliamentary activity is rewarded by parties in subsequent candidate selection processes.1/
Interesting article in @hsfi about MPs deciding not to run in the 2023 elections. This opens the floor for ambitious newcomers since MPs tend to dominate competition. But how large is the "incumbency advantage" in Finnish elections? 1/4

In the final paper of the workshop, @MihailChiru shows how gender affects nomination and electoral
success of European Parliament candidates. #intracomp
@AudreyVdleene investigates incumbency and
ballot position effects on ethnic minority candidates’ intraparty competitiveness in Brussels local elections. #intracomp
Salomo Hirvonen (University of Turku) tests for list choice effects on incumbency advantage and re-running in the context of Columbian local elections, where parties can choose whether they run with open or closed lists. #intracomp
Day 2 of @CompIntra final workshop continues with an interesting presentation of ethnic and migrant candidates usage of VAAs by @JosefinaSipinen @veikko_isotalo and Sami Borg.
@OlleFolke presents novel work that tests Kitschelt's (1994) theory of labor market experiences leading to particular ideological positions using Swedish register data on political candidates #intracomp
@JanneTukiainen presented findings that (male) local candidates in the Finnish unranked OLPR have higher cognitive and non-cognitive skills than the general population using IQ test data from Finnish Defence Forces.
Final workshop of the @CompIntra project with a fantastic group of scholars gathered! Interesting discussions and sun. What more do you need? @SocSciHelsinki@SuomenAkatemia
A pleasure to see the @CompIntra colleagues in person in sunny Helsinki! Presenting work in progress with @CoffeHilde and listening to fresh projects on intraparty competition during the final project workshop.
Leen Lingier (Ghent University) presenting results from a survey experiment on Belgian party members. Her experiment presents a hypothetical case of party joining (or not) a coalition
government after either inclusive or exclusive decision-making process. #intracomp
