From crisp green onions to rich red onions, apples, and citrus, these colorful crates brought so much joy to our volunteer team and warehouse shelves! 🥦
Access to fresh, wholesome fruits and vegetables is a fundamental part of healthy living and food security. Thanks to Food Banks Mississauga, we can ensure that the 2,000 local neighbours who rely on The Compass every week leave with fresh, high-quality ingredients to nourish themselves and their families. 📊 THE HUNGERCOUNT 2026 REPORT IS OUT 📊

Food Banks Canada has released its annual HungerCount 2026 report, titled "Impossible Trade-Offs". The data paints a stark picture of the relentless pressure facing households across the country as rising housing costs, food inflation, and inadequate income supports push millions to the brink.

Here are the critical national highlights:

2.35 Million Monthly Visits: Food banks across Canada recorded over 2.35 million visits in a single month.

Unprecedented Growth: Monthly visits are 117% higher than in 2019 and up 8.7% over last year alone.

1 in 3 Visitors is a Child: Children account for 32.5% of all food bank visits—representing nearly 776,000 monthly visits.

Working Is No Longer Enough: 18% of food bank clients are employed, up from 12% in 2019, showing that income isn't keeping pace with basic living costs.

Seniors on the Rise: Seniors now represent 9% of clients, up from 6.8% in 2019.

Fixed Incomes Under Strain: 41% of clients rely on social assistance or provincial disability supports as their main source of income.

Behind these national statistics are real stories of neighbours in our own community who are forced to make impossible choices between paying rent, buying medicine, or putting food on the table. At The Compass Food Bank, we see this reality every day as we support 2,000 local neighbours every week.

Emergency food relief helps keep tables full today, but ending hunger requires long-term, systemic solutions, including affordable housing, living wages, and adequate social safety nets. Access to food is a fundamental human right.

To celebrate their 25th Anniversary, the L.O.T.T. (Ladies Off The Tee) team organized a special drive for The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre, collecting and donating over 143 lbs. of essential food items and diapers for our clients experiencing food insecurity!
