Looking back, Sir Horace Phillips said "like a traditional Jew, I can only reflect on how proud my mother would have been".
We hope this project would have made Sir Horace proud and that the Phillips Room inspires staff and visitors of all backgrounds to fulfil their potential.

It was a moment of celebration, reflection and pride. We celebrated the achievements of all who came before us, reflected on the challenges they overcame, and felt proud to continue the tradition of great 🇬🇧 Jewish diplomacy from Sir Horace Phillips to Dame @MelSimmonsFCDO today.

We were inspired by the Jewish boy born to a refugee family in Glasgow, who never attended university, dreamt of diplomacy and wound up as a British ambassador, Arabist and Middle East expert - against all the odds. A particular Jewish story, but also, a universal British story.

So proud to see my grandfather remembered like this. From a working class, Jewish family in Glasgow to British ambassador. Such a great role model to me and a great example to many. Thank you @sophierossuk and @PhilipRBarton for honouring Sir Horace like this.

Yesterday we opened the Phillips Room at @FCDOGovUK dedicated to Sir Horace Phillips, the first British Jewish career ambassador, to celebrate the contribution of Jewish staff to our Diplomatic Service, with @PhilipRBarton, Sir Horace's family and current and former Jewish staff.
