He said this in the same speech. July 26, 1794. Two days before they killed him.

"I leave to the oppressors of the people a terrible testament... it is the awful truth: Thou shalt die!"

He never said who he meant.

July 27, 1794. The most feared man in France stands up in the National Convention and cannot make himself heard.

Maximilien Robespierre ran the Committee of Public Safety. He had sent thousands to the guillotine.

By nightfall the room had voted his arrest.

Here is the part that lasts. The coalition agreed on exactly one thing, removing him, and it could not govern.

Five years later Napoleon took the country in a coup. Ten years later he crowned himself emperor.

Fear built the alliance. It did not build a replacement.

Did it reach Jefferson? Nobody can prove it, and serious historians disagree.

But John Adams spent 1780 to 1782 in Amsterdam arguing the Americans were fighting the war the Dutch had already won.

On July 26, 1581, at The Hague, the States General of the United Provinces fired their king.

No battle. No throne room. A document, drafted by four provincial secretaries and a clerk.

Philip II of Spain had forfeited the Low Countries, and every oath sworn to him was void.

By 1588 they had run out of candidates and started governing themselves.

The Dutch Republic ran until 1795, and it took a French invasion to end it. Nobody designed it. It was what was left.

It produced the VOC, the Amsterdam exchange, and a century of commercial dominance.

July 25, 1965. Bob Dylan walks onto the stage at the Newport Folk Festival carrying an electric guitar.

Newport helped make him the voice of folk music. Fifteen minutes later, part of that crowd was booing goodbye to the Dylan they came to see.

And the room he walked out of? Newport Folk Festival went dark after 1969. The 1971 edition was canceled days before the gates. It stayed dead 15 years.

He didn't chase a bigger market. He refused to be a jukebox. The market followed.
