Comrie Conversations are a series of discussions around the future of Scotland. Coming together to learn and share opinions on the way forward for our country.
An inspiring and thought provoking Comrie Conversations Election Special. Thank you to Bo, @stephenpaton134 and the @ComrieChats team for providing much food for thought. It's time to challenge the @scotgov to put the Climate Crisis at the centre of all future policies.
A great question to start: "How can we be sure that all of the good intentions and promises are more than words?" Bo Kjeldgaard, Copenhagen. @ComrieChats#ComrieConversations
Oh I've got so much reading to do! Thank you @GemmaLouiseBon1 and @franboait for an inspiring #ComrieConversations session. You both stated that "We can't afford NOT to do a green recovery." Our challenge is how we will work collectively to make it happen. @ComrieChats
Fran discusses "... the need for universal basic services. We have seen more privatisation in the last 10 years. In terms of climate change we need to transform our transport systems. I do see the need to think about universal basic services as an important shift to reduce costs"
Our next question "There is a need for some huge systemic changes, e.g. restructuring of the banks/need for big actions. Do you think a universal basic income should be one these changes?"
Fran answers "It can be a bit of a red herring. Hyperinflation situations are a breakdown of political establishments as opposed to economic context." Gemma follows with stating "There are no limits on how much money we create. What we spend is what makes the difference."
Our first question for our speakers; "What do you suggest we do as a small community and as individuals in achieving the things you have spoken about this morning?" #ComrieConversations
Fran states "People power can work. Signing petitions, getting involved in local organising on important issues, just transition groups & empowering yourself by thinking & learning more is key to the process" #ComrieConversations
Fran discusses the importance of “...getting money to devolved countries & local authorities. How do we make sure we devolve public finance to parts across the country? This is what we need for a green recovery." #ComrieConversations
Fran states "Money is seen as power. It is a scarce resource, it is a weapon of the elite. It is a tool and should be used primarily in the public interest & in a democratic way.” #ComrieConversations
Fran continues "We have seen it in the Covid-19 pandemic, when there is an emergency there is a way to find money. The people in power are not getting things right as opposed to not having enough money" #ComrieConversations
Fran Boait discusses the current economic climate... "The kind of people who have the most power in the world seem to be messing things up – the system at play here is really dysfunctional" #ComrieConversations
Gemma tells us of the Maldives... "it will cease to exist in our lifetime as climate change is an existential crisis. Homes will go under water. We can't negotiate with nature. This is the horror to come if we let climate change continue on its current path" #ComrieConversations
"We can't negotiate with outer boundaries such as the planetary boundaries... While we have been arguing if we can afford it, we have ignored the complex but necessary task of managing our scarce resources" #ComrieConversations
Gemma Bone Dodds kicks off the discussion “I urge you to start thinking not in fiscal terms but in terms of what we can do within ecological boundaries & human boundaries” #ComrieConversations
This Sunday, catch @franboait and @GemmaLouiseBon1 on #ComrieChats, a series of conversations on issues of importance for the future of Scotland.
