Wants to build our promising country's recognition of cost of over-valued, stolid Conservative leaders. Suffers from Pünchausen syndrome, a facetious disorder.
@amartin_nl@stphnmaher Yes, it’s crazy how we ignore human input costs. We all acknowledge service (& police) *dogs* cost $50 k in raising, feeding, & training to get job ready, yet pretend its different with people. SK/NF pay $260k development costs; AB reaps peak tax years free; & returns them broken
@NoGunsInCanada are there scores of movies, comic books, and video games glorifying and possibly instigating first-person mass killing behind the wheel of minivans? not exactly analagous then are they
@allrockmusic I only knew them from their " Easy Livin' " hit on pop/rock radio in 70s & for years thought they were a Southern Rock band; others set me straight they were prog rock, decades later
@mjbonne@TheJasonPugh@PierrePoilievre Bull. There were only about 2,500 registered to individuals when the long gun registry ended in 2012.
By Province, it was AB 283 BC 510 MB 155 NB 47 NF 23 NS 60 NT 6 NU 2 ON 1035 PE 4 QC 278 SK 141 YT 6 Total 2550
@PH_OSINT@alandrummond2 Means matter. https://t.co/itVYV97Ts1 That chart supports that: the suicide rate among Cndn vets - only about 1/4 of whom own guns, vs 1/2 of US's https://t.co/8ucEGYoq0p - is actually about a third lower than Americans (27.0 vs 35.2 per 100,000 in 2023).
@judyatrinh the community note incorporating the gunnies objection to including airsoft/BB guns/replicas etc is misguided: yes, they're included in the def. of crime guns, but it is highly unlikely that they would bother to trace any of them - the RCMP doesn't care who makes or sells toys
@RudiGunn67@judyatrinh but even if it's just 10% of those accused of firearms homicide that are licenced, because they were permitted to practice in ranges, they're probably a lot more proficient than the average criminal, especially w/ certain types of guns. hence some bans
@RudiGunn67@judyatrinh except no one's banning them all, not even close. just the one that seem more likely to inflict or induce mass-casualty events. But re: the data on recoveries: here's the variable StatCan is trying to make police have to take note of & report; may take them a few years to comply.
@RudiGunn67@judyatrinh blah blah blah. The fact is, some originally legal guns DO end up being used in crimes in Canada, no matter how much you protest otherise.
@RudiGunn67@judyatrinh and police forces have been notoriously bad at keeping track of lost or stolen firearms recoveries; StatCan's added that as required fields in the UCR in 2021 & is trying to pressure them to comply https://t.co/kJeOOcY15F
@RudiGunn67@judyatrinh yes, but that's only for "LAGO"s homicides - which are mostly committed on their intimate partners or other family members. The wider issue is how many of the people stealing LAGOs' guns use them in other crimes - you're ridiculously pretending virtually none.
@RudiGunn67@judyatrinh similarly in 2024, In firearm-related homicides where an accused was ID'd, 20% had a valid firearms licence for the class of firearm used (30% of the accused for long guns, and 10% for homicides committed with handguns). https://t.co/5827TsmKmA
@RudiGunn67@judyatrinh oh really. At least 1,000 reported stolen or lost guns are recovered/yr. And for homicides alone, in 2023, "the accused had a valid licence in 9.1% (6 of 66) of homicides involving a handgun and in 11% (5 of 45) of homicides involving a rifle or shotgun." https://t.co/Ja1cIGpkBx
