My friend gave me a spare key to his apartment and told me I could come over anytime.
One Saturday, I used it.
A woman opened the door.
She looked at me and said, “You’re early.”
I froze.
“Who are you?”
She smiled.
“I could ask you the same thing.”
We compared messages.
Same man.
Same apartment.
Same “I’m working late” excuses.
Then the front door opened.
He walked in, saw us, and stopped dead.
Before either of us could speak, another woman walked in behind him.
She looked at all three of us.
Then she said:
“Wait… are you girls dating him too?”
Nobody answered.
She sighed.
“Because I’m his landlord.”
We all stared at her.
She held up a folder.
“And apparently, he hasn’t paid rent in six months.”
The four of us looked at him.
For the first time that evening, he was the one with nowhere to hide.
