24.9% - that's the area of ocean floor on Earth that has now been mapped to "modern standards". The new figure was released this morning by Prince Albert of Monaco at the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Assembly.
An additional 5.4 million sq km of new data - equating to an area twice the size of Argentina - was added in the past year. A good part of this is previously proprietary data being released into @gebcobathymetry@seabed2030 database. Coloured in red is the additional area.
When the quest to assemble a comprehensive map of Earth's ocean floor was begun in 2017, the quoted number was just 6%.
So, rapid progress has been made, but to put the lack of knowledge about our own planet in context - when the new seamount catalogue was published last month it included over 19,000 newly discovered undersea volcanoes. Think about that - 19,000 mountains on Earth that we previously didn't know about.
Thinking about the National Review blogger who spent the whole day writing a post explaining why Harlan Crow paying for Clarence Thomas’s kid’s tuition is Super Cool and Legal, and now has to deal with Leonard Leo being like “GIVE GINNI THOMAS THIS SACK OF CASH, NO FINGERPRINTS”

@KatyCroffBell @anupaasokan@TEDx I know the organizers have added POC speakers as was always the intention. I don’t know if the lineup has been finalized yet. When I raised the issue, I was told the image shared here was never intended to be a final lineup… More to come I hope!
Dear friends, CHECK YOUR FIRE ALARMS. Motivated by the devastating loss of an Aspen Institute colleague to an apartment fire over the weekend, I did. Three of them are nearly 10 years out of date, and weren't making *any noise* at all.
Don't be me. Check your alarms.
@theerubicon@Aimsel Deep sigh. The point is not that it’s not ok to be white. It’s that our society is so slanted toward whiteness that the act of proclaiming such on a street corner is just performative provocation showing nothing but ignorance of our long history of discrimination.
@TamarHaspel@JohnNCoupland Order some from 1820 Brewing, a spin-off of @gearybrewing, Maine’s original micro, and they recently beat Athletic in a taste off at a local Portland beer market. I like their Peek Interest Pale Ale… https://t.co/xB7N0zOZzG
@nirav_mainecdc @netflix@hulu@AppleTV@hbomax Maybe instead of fancy branded names, they could just use a simple numbering system to organize each streaming service? But the system should start with 2 so nobody fights over who gets to be #1.
It was six years ago, and my mate, Pink, had just been told he was going to die. He accepted the news with a grace I can only marvel at, but he said he’d a list of things he’d still like to do.
We sat in a pub one night and read it over. Eight things? Four months? Ok. Deal.
