Right at the end of confession, during my Act of Contrition, Padre gets a phone call. He interrupts me, saying “Oh excuse me. Pause for a moment it’s the emergency line”

He takes the call listened for 10 seconds then said ok, just one minute. Muted the call, had me finish my act of contrition then gave me absolution and told me to stay in confessional while he took call so that no one else walked in while he was on phone.

It was someone at a hospital asking for Last Rites for a loved one. The priest asked if it could wait 40 minutes for confession to end (there were at least 25 people behind me).

The person on the call said yes so Padre said he’d come to the hospital at 4:30. Hung up, thanked me for staying and apologized for interrupting my contrition. And I’m like no sweat Padre, duty calls. And he said yes it does, thanks be to God

Maybe say a prayer for the departed and Father Emmanuel who was so adept at switching gears between his sacramental duties.

Going to heaven is not a reward for our virtue or rightness; virtue is its own reward. Holiness is its own reward.
Heaven is not an exchange, it’s a gift.
I worry that sometimes, we fight hard over the minutia of worship or morality so that we can pretend we’ve played some part in earning heaven.
It seems a big part of holiness is swallowing our pride and learning to receive all He wants to give with childlike innocence, expectation and joy.
It’s heaven all the way to heaven. It’s hell all the way to hell.
