Let's see: US and Israeli warplanes range freely over Iran, having hit thousands of targets, and are hitting more every day. The Iranian leadership has been taken out. Its new leader cannot or will not show his face. Its air defenses have been ineffective, destroyed or both. Its navy is largely gone. So It has now effectively blocked ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway vital to its own economy. US media would have you believe Iran has turned the tide in the war because blocking the strait never occurred to US war planners. You can choose to believe this. I don't.

I must say I find it puzzling that critics harp on the question of whether there was an "imminent threat" from Iran. I get that such a threat is a legal justification for action without Congressional approval. But the question suggests that threats should be allowed to become highly advanced before they can be addressed.

President Trump (@POTUS @realDonaldTrump) approaches issues from a strategic and holistic manner. This is how he is assessing intelligence and options regarding #Iran, looking at the best application of some or all instruments of U.S. power to safeguard the American people and U.S. security and interests.

#Diplomacy —bilateral or multilateral-#Sanctions, military action —for deterrence or defense—are part of a continuum, not to be considered in isolation. A number of options are also delineated in U.S. laws such as the Iran Sanctions Act.

President Trump, as @POTUS45 and now, has demonstrated his commitment to peaceful resolution of security matters but for diplomacy to succeed, he must have similarly committed interlocutors.

The Iranian leadership did not avail itself of the opportunities offered by President Trump via #nuclear talks. The President even paused NEW sanctions to give peace a chance.

The Iranian regime, instead, chose to continue its violations of its arms control, nonproliferation and disarmament commitments and obligations—something that continued covertly throughout the Obama JCPOA and known/documented since 2018/2019. And not just nuclear.

President Trump is focused on the “actions and policies of the Government of #Iran” which “pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States.”

These are outlined in President Trump’s March 2025 Executive Order extending the NATIONAL EMERGENCY WITH RESPECT TO IRAN.

A separate National Emergency is in effect due to the #IslamicRepublicofIran continued #hostage taking and wrongful detention of U.S. nationals.

Having served President Trump in the arms control, nonproliferation and disarmament space in the 45th administration, I know he is singularly focused on what is best for the U.S. and the American people.
