The Football Association of Ireland has confirmed a new full-time international coaching structure that will strengthen the development & level of support provided across Ireland’s underage international pathway 🇮🇪⚽️

The innovative model will see five full-time International Lead Coaches - Noel Hunt, Chelsea Noonan, John Cotter, Keith O’Halloran & James Scott - working alongside four full-time International Coaches - Conor McCormack, Graham Gartland, Mark Connors & Richie Smith - across all teams, from Under-15 up to Under-19 level

The structure has been designed to transition away from a traditional age-group model and instead create a more connected coaching team working across development phases, supporting player development & ensuring greater alignment throughout the pathway ☘️

Huge congrats to our partners Man City on their FA Cup win, and particularly this guy, Antoine Semenyo - an incredible, non-linear pathway to elite football.

Rejected by top Premier League and Championship clubs as a youth, Semenyo openly admitted he was a “late developer” physically. Essentially he disappeared from the football league pyramid, reappearing at 17.

And the latest research says there are probably far more Semenyos out there than the system currently captures.

Recent studies across elite male academy football in Scotland, Sweden, Austria and wider Europe continue to show a strong selection bias toward early-maturing players from as young as U12 onwards.

Physically advanced players are more likely to be selected, retained and given minutes, while later developers consistently underrepresented.

One of the biggest 2025 studies in male academy football (Curayn et al 2025), involving over 1,000 players across Scotland, found the bias toward early developers actually increases with age group.

However researchers are increasingly questioning whether those physical advantages actually translate into senior elite success long-term.

Further research (Aixa-Requena, 2025) now suggests that once late developers physically catch up, many of them may actually build stronger technical, tactical and psychological traits because they had to survive without relying on physical dominance during their early/mid teenage years.

Does being the best academy player at 14 mean becoming the best senior player at 24? Maybe not.
