I’ve been thinking about how narrative tailwinds turn to headwinds for markets around Q2 this year and wasn’t sure how to express it visually and I’m pretty happy with how Claude did it for me:
@TheStalwart@MattZeitlin You’ve probably thought about this, but I think the main obsession most US sports casuals have about the World Cup is just that it’s this big global competition that we somehow aren’t the best at. Don’t think soccer is the key part of the fascination.
@TheStalwart@MattZeitlin If “industrial policy for elite soccer players” I feel like we’d have more Messis and Haalands and Mbappes, but at the very high end it seems pretty random.
My kids are right at the precipice of when travel sports take off, so I can’t speak with a ton of personal experience here yet, but something we’ve heard is there are so many kids in youth sports in metro Atlanta that travel here often means an hour north, not like 6 hours away.
@mattyglesias In baseball it seems like you eventually need to be able to hit 95mph pitching or throw 95mph, and I’m pretty skeptical we can project that for 10-year olds.
@mattyglesias What I don’t get (again I’m no expert here) is there are a lot of sports where until you see how the puberty lottery goes you have no idea if kids will have the physical gifts to have potential, so what’s the point if your kid only ends up 5’9”.
An economic development friend relayed this point to me about Atlanta when we were really cooking in 2021 and I was feeling complacent, but seeing how we’ve stagnated a bit the past few years I get the point better now.
The lesson here is: if you settle for 0.5% less growth because you think you've got it made, in 20 years you'll find yourself on the B team, in 40 you'll a be moribund backwater, and in 60 you'll have fallen so far it doesn't even occur to anyone you used to be a big deal
My son’s 7-year spring baseball league (not travel) had 10 teams of 12-13 kids/team, that’s 120+ 7-year old boys all clustered in one suburban city. Similar numbers for 6 and 8-year olds.
We get our first day in a month without monocultural sports and it’s back to the same old fights, gotta keep that in mind for two weeks from now when the World Cup is over.
@TheStalwart For some reason, even though it’s the opposite of history, I’d be bullish Las Vegas too. Just all of that experiential spectacle agglomerated in one place.
