The Terrace Pond West Loop is an absolute classic North Jersey hike in my book. This 4.8 mile trail contains nearly 500 feet of elevation and is a great example of a “moderate” hike. Not too tough, but certainly not too easy. Check it out if you’re in the area 💪🏼
Stairway to Heaven is probably the most popular hike in all of New Jersey. The full out-and-back trail is 7.5 miles long with a mean 1,100 feet of elevation. It’s also part of the Appalachian Trail. Do you think this trail is worth the hype?? 🤔
The Timber Rattlesnake is native to the eastern United States. They’re usually between 2.5 - 5 feet in length & their venom is potent enough to kill a human. Luckily, they’re quite timid and reluctant to bite. Never get within 6 feet of these beautiful creatures in the wild ☝🏼
And if you think it’s too hot for you, just stay home! Plan to hit the trail on a cooler day. There’s no shame in that as long as you know your own limits. Stay safe out there friends! 👍🏼
Here are a few shots from my 97°F hike the other day. It was a SPICY one and definitely a challenge… But luckily, I was prepared. Here’s a thread on how to stay safe when hiking in this type of heat…
Pack lightly. This is not the time to load your backpack with extra gadgets that you don’t need. The lighter your bag is, the less likely you’ll be to overheat.
Bring a washcloth or small towel with you. If you feel like you’re overheating, you can douse it in cool water and apply to the back of your neck. This should help to cool you down.
