The context of the French Revolution had a strong influence on his youth: he made his first confession at the foot of the great clock, in the common room of the house where he was born, rather than in the village church, and received absolution from an underground priest.
Two years later, he made his First Communion in a barn, during an underground mass celebrated by a refractory priest.
At 17, he chose to answer God’s call: “I’d like to win souls for God,” he told his mother, Marie Béluze. But his father opposed the project for two years, as there was a shortage of hands at his father’s house.
Once in the seminary everyone thought he was too stupid to be a priest.
He couldn’t read, struggled with Latin, and was nearly kicked out of seminary.
But God had other plans.
After years of struggle and private tutoring, Jean was finally ordained at age 29.
He was sent to a forgotten village in rural France.
A tiny, desolate place called Ars.
The bishop said: “There is little love of God in that parish, you will bring it there.”
There, he awakened the faith of his parishioners through his preaching, but above all through his prayer and his way of life.
He feels poor in front of the mission to be accomplished, but he lets himself be seized by God’s mercy.
He restored and embellished his church, founded an orphanage: “La Providence” and took care of the poorest.
By 1824, however, he began experiencing what he believed were attacks from the Devil.
At first, he suspected burglars. But the disturbances continued, and other people began witnessing strange events.
What followed would become one of the most remarkable accounts of spiritual warfare in the life of a Catholic saint.
The disturbances reportedly began with violent banging on the rectory doors, strange voices, and noises resembling heavy carts rolling through the house.
One night, Vianney asked a local wheelwright named André Verchère to stay with him, believing someone might be trying to break in.
Shortly after midnight, the house shook violently. André grabbed his gun and searched for an intruder, but found nobody.
He was so frightened that he refused to spend another night there.
On another occasion, while Vianney was staying with fellow priests during a mission at Saint-Trivier, they heard a tremendous disturbance coming from his bedroom.
Rushing inside, they reportedly discovered that his bed had been dragged into the middle of the room.
His own sister, Marguerite, also testified about hearing unexplained knocking while staying at the rectory.
Vianney called his tormentor "le Grappin," roughly meaning "the grappling hook."
According to accounts of his life, he reported being pulled by the feet, hearing mocking voices, and suffering nights of interrupted sleep.
Yet something fascinated him.
He noticed that especially violent disturbances often preceded the arrival of someone seeking reconciliation with God.
He began describing these penitents as "big fish."
The reason was simple: people who had spent years away from the Church were arriving in Ars to confess their sins and change their lives.
Vianney believed the Devil was trying to exhaust and frighten him because of his ministry.
But the attacks did not persuade him to abandon the confessional.
Instead, he continued praying, fasting, offering Mass, and hearing Confessions.
At the height of his ministry, he spent as many as 16 hours a day reconciling sinners with God.
