PRECEPTS

If you have a Town or Parish Council where you live, then you will be paying a precept as well as your Council Tax. I believe in small state and low taxes. I believe that precepts should be as low as they can be and that your money belongs to you.

Every year I urge restraint on the town and parish councils in my constituency. In the main this message has been heeded. Edlington Town Council for example have reduced their precept for this coming year by 1.5%.

Sadly Thorne-Moorends Town Council raised their precept last year by 33.57% and this year are raising it again by 21%. This rise on a rise is effectively a 61% increase in two years. I have challenged them. They tell me this is due to cost of living and inflation. I don’t accept that. It looks more like empire building. The very opposite of small state and low taxes.

I am collating the figures but hope that your Town or Parish Council follows the example set by Edlington and not the one by Thorne-Moorends. If these rises continue then perhaps we need to legislate to stop it as we do with local authorities.
