This is why you need a real diplomat to manage negotiations.

One of the most insensitive and offensive things you can say in a room full of Ukrainians is that “everyone was lovely speaking russian.”

Making Ukrainians speak russian is humiliating and feeds russian propaganda that Ukrainians and russians are “one nation with one language.”

The very fact that so many Ukrainians know russian is the result of centuries of occupation, russification, and bans on the Ukrainian language imposed by Moscow.

Today, Ukrainian POWs are forced to speak russian as part of their abuse in captivity. Their families are forbidden from writing letters to them in Ukrainian. For Ukrainians in captivity, their language is one of the last forms of freedom and identity they still have, and they will be brutally beaten for speaking it or even singing a Ukrainian song.

The same goes for the occupied territories, especially Donbas, which russia wants to seize in its entirety so badly.

HODGES: Witkoff and Kushner achieved absolutely zero, at least nothing positive, during their trip.

The disgusting sucking up to Putin on display by Witkoff and Kushner was hard to even watch. It's embarrassing.

And then they went to Kyiv to basically deliver Kremlin's message, you know, nothing new, nothing, whatever.

At the same time, Russians were killing innocent civilians on the sidelines of this meeting.

So yeah, nothing good came out of that. And nothing ever will come out of it.

Because Trump administration still doesn't understand or care about the origin of the conflict.

All they want is to get credit for stopping it.

They want Russia to get what it wants, and then let's get on with business. That's their entire approach.

Of course, with that level of understanding and thinking, Ukrainians will never accept that.

It was brilliant that Zelenskyy invited British, German, and French participation so that they could all see this nonsense firsthand.

And so Trump administration has never had real leverage over Ukraine anyway.

I think Ukrainians played along as far as they could in hopes that there would be a restart of Patriot.

But I think now that's not going to happen, and so there's nothing cheerful to report at this point.

‼️A very interesting moment in the video released by the Kremlin showing negotiations between Putin, Ushakov, Witkoff, and Kushner.

Putin personally says the so-called ceasefire supposedly started at midnight today, not on Sep. 6, which means it had already been violated by russia multiple times.

Even more interestingly, Witkoff thanks Putin for securing a 3-day ceasefire, while Putin openly tells him that the 3-day ceasefire was Ukraine’s proposal and that russia never agreed to it.

WITKOFF: I wanna thank you for endorsing the no shoot policy in Kyiv and in Moscow for these three days that allowed us to be able to come here in a safe manner.

PUTIN: We received this proposal through official channels, through the intelligence services, and through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. To cease strikes on Kyiv. I gave the appropriate order, and as of 00:00 today, no strikes on Kyiv have been carried out. I would like to note that the Ukrainian side has also significantly reduced strikes on the territory of the russian federation, by an order of magnitude, including on Moscow. The Ukrainian authorities published their own appeal for a broader three-day ceasefire. But we never agreed on that with them. But we will do everything within our power to ensure the safety of the negotiation process and the mediators, including you, and perhaps those accompanying you.

JUST A FEW FACTS ABOUT russian ATTACKS ON SEP. 5:

Kyiv region: 2 people were killed and 1 injured in a russian drone attack.

Dnipropetrovsk region: russians attacked 6 districts. In total, 1 person was killed and 6 injured.

Zhytomyr region: A russian attack caused a fire at a business. No casualties were reported.

Odesa region: russian drones struck infrastructure, causing a fire at a food storage warehouse. No casualties were reported.

And these are only a few examples. I’m not even mentioning the strikes on Kyiv throughout the day, including the one happening right now.
