Sometimes called a beater, a batten is a tool used to help push the yarn when weaving on a loom. This batten was found on a dig by Stuart Young. Later that summer Stuart and his guide, Dugai Begay, would make the trek to Rainbow Bridge and become famous in the archaeology world.

Manson was chosen as spokesperson because he was an educated man, and also knew much of the Manson Mesa area where he had herded his sheep for many years. Because of his help in the land exchange, Manson Mesa was named after him, and became the subsequent location for Page, AZ
