This is Theo Gottshalk. He threatened a teenager with a machete in broad daylight in a Nottingham city centre fast food restaurant.

He told the boy he would chop his arm off if he refused to hand over his mobile phone.

The 20-year-old took the phone, a bracelet, and a chain before fleeing the scene on Woolpack Lane.

A few weeks later, someone recognised him on a Nottingham bus and called the police.

Officers tracked him down and followed him into the McDonald's on Clumber Street. Gottshalk violently resisted arrest and tried to fight his way out.

The struggle ended when a police officer deployed a Taser on the now-shirtless man.

As the Taser hit, a large, red-handled machete dropped out of his trousers. It perfectly matched the weapon described by the teenager he had robbed.

Police also found Class B drugs hidden on him during the search.

It turns out he had also committed two other robberies in Birmingham, and he had previously been caught carrying a converted blank firing pistol.

Detective Constable Ben Grayson says Gottshalk thought nothing of putting lives at risk.

"He was at this point a danger to the wider public and I am pleased he has now been held to account," he says.

Gottshalk was handed an extended 13-year custodial sentence at Birmingham Crown Court.

⚠️ RESPECT ORDERS ARE NOW IN FORCE — 26 OCTOBER 2026.

Here's what you need to know:

🔴 A court can impose restrictions using the CIVIL standard of proof — balance of probabilities.

🔴 Breaching those restrictions becomes a CRIMINAL offence.

🔴 You could face up to TWO YEARS in prison for a breach.

🔴 The legal definition of anti-social behaviour includes conduct causing, or likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress.

🔴 Police, councils and other authorised bodies can apply for these orders.

THINK ABOUT THAT.

Conduct that does not itself meet the threshold for a criminal conviction can lead to a civil order — and breaching that order can result in criminal prosecution.

The government says this is about tackling persistent anti-social behaviour.

But who decides where anti-social behaviour ends and legitimate disagreement begins?

WHAT PROTECTS PEACEFUL PROTEST, FREE SPEECH AND UNPOPULAR OPINIONS?

Let's be clear: there is no established evidence that Respect Orders are being used to criminalise political views. But the breadth of these powers makes proper scrutiny essential.

And with official crime statistics also affected by changes in recording and survey methodology, the public deserves transparency about what is changing and why.

Imagine you are a 7 year old little girl, waiting for your mum at a hostel in Acton, west London.

A man offers you an apple.

You say no five times.

He pulls you into his room and sexually assaults you. You manage to run away and tell your mum what happened immediately.

Afsar Safi entered the UK by small boat in 2021. He claimed that he was associated with the Taliban since he was a child himself. His application for asylum had been refused but he was appealing this when the assault took place.

His reason for assaulting a 7 year old was that it was culturally normal to kiss children where he was from.

He initially received 2.5 years for kidnap and sexual assault.

That is an appalling sentence.

On Friday, the Court of Appeal found it to be far too lenient and increased it….to 4 years.

He is likely to serve just half of that in prison and almost certainly will not be deported for “human rights” reasons.
