Raised in poverty by a single mother in the Caribbean, he was self-made in every sense of the word. What made him extraordinary was the combination no one else had. Adams was the intellectual. Jefferson was the philosopher. Hamilton was both. And he could also fight.

She was 16 years old. She rode 40 miles alone through the night and outperformed every man who came before her.
Most Americans know Paul Revere. Fewer know that a 16-year-old girl rode twice as far on a similar mission and finished it. On April 26, 1777, British forces raided Danbury, Connecticut. Someone needed to ride through Putnam County, New York, and rally the militia. Sybil Ludington volunteered. She rode approximately 40 miles through the dark, through the rain, alone. Paul Revere’s famous ride covered roughly 20 miles. Revere was captured before he finished. Sybil completed hers and made it home before dawn.
Nobody wrote a poem about it.

When the Revolution came, he remained loyal to the British Crown. The Continental Congress had him arrested in 1776. He was imprisoned, then exiled to England. Benjamin Franklin largely excluded him from his will. They never fully reconciled.
Some of the highest prices paid for the Revolution were never paid on a battlefield.
