The Case for a Postwar Israeli Base in Somaliland:
A Red Sea Game-Changer
by BrianBJ
Once Israel emerges from its multi-front war, Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran’s direct strikes, a postwar power move looms: a military base in Somaliland.
This de facto state on the Horn of Africa, stable since the 1990s yet unrecognized, offers Israel a launchpad to crush three mutual threats shared with its Gulf allies: Houthi aggression, Iranian meddling, and resurgent piracy—while checking China’s creep. With a slick diplomatic play—looping in Saudi Arabia, syncing with UAE, rallying a coalition—or even going solo, Israel locks down the Red Sea and cements ties. Here’s the case and playbook.
Why Somaliland? Location and Threats
Somaliland’s 300–400 km from Houthi Yemen beats Israel’s 2,000-km slog. F-35s hit missile sites in minutes, no refueling. Near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, it’s a naval-air chokehold on Iran’s proxy lifeline and piracy-plagued trade lanes. The threats align:
◼️Houthis: Drones and missiles battering Israel and Saudi cities since 2024 get smashed faster.
◼️Iran: IRGC arms to Yemen wither under Israeli ships and drones.
◼️Piracy: Gulf pirates spiking costs sink under joint patrols.
China: Beijing’s Djibouti-Somalia play meets a Western counter. Postwar, it’s a steal—security, trade, and Israel’s bold DNA (Entebbe, Osirak) in action.
Somaliland’s Case: Montevideo and Self-Determination
Somaliland’s a state: 5.7 million people, ex-British borders, elections since ‘91, deals with UAE and Ethiopia—Montevideo’s checklist clears. Its self-determination as indigenous clans reclaiming pre-1960 status after Somalia’s tyranny seals it. Recognition’s overdue; Israel can lead.
The Strategy: Coalition or Solo
Partners juice it, but solo’s low-risk. Here’s how:
Loop in Saudi Arabia
Now if Israel is wise it would brief MBS pre-move, the Saudi's hate surprises and respect being consulted and informed: “Houthis, Iran, piracy—Somaliland’s our fix. Your oil routes and Yemen border win.” is a winning pitch to make to the Saudi's. Saudi’s warming ties with Israel (2024 airspace) and trade stakes say yes. Fuel, intel, or a nod locks them in—no blindsiding.
Sync with UAE
UAE’s Berbera base since 2017 sets the stage. A separate Israeli hub nearby, high-security perimeter, deepens Abraham Accords muscle. Joint anti-piracy ops—UAE boats, Israeli drones—hit pirates, test bigger plays (Houthi strikes, Iran intel). Abu Dhabi gets trade security, tighter ties.
Coalition—or Solo Swagger
Ideal: Israel, UAE, Ethiopia, U.S. drop recognition together giving it real movement and it gives each other diplomatic cover. Ethiopia brings Horn clout as the regional powerhouse; Trump’s “Somaliland’s real” fits his style. The quartet buries Somalia’s UN complaints and the African Union border dogma. Saudi’s okay nudges Egypt and Bahrain/Oman.
and if Israel has to go solo? Israel loses nothing: foes (Iran, Qatar) rant anyway; allies (U.S., UAE) back it.
Sell It Big
“This base kills Houthis, curbs Iran, sinks pirates, checks China—Red Sea stability starts here.” Gulf states see trade; U.S./EU see piracy’s fix. Somaliland’s creds win.
The military Base: Nuts and Bolts
Postwar, Israel builds west of Berbera port, a separate base with high-security perimeter:
Air: F-35s for Houthi runs, drones for anti piracy operations and a Puntland watch. Hercules hauls gear; Ethiopia supplies food, parts.
Naval: Sa’ar corvettes patrol Bab el-Mandeb, with UAE boats, maybe even Saudi fuel.
Special Forces: Raids on Houthi or pirate nests, prepped for Iran.
Israel sweetens it possibly with desalination, clinics, roads, drones, patrol boats for Somaliland’s clans, building grassroots support cheap and smart at their low economic baseline. A small budget could build a lot of goodwill in the surrounding clans, a well dug in one place, a school or clinic fixed or stocked, some potholes fixes or a road upgraded to tarmac.
Blowback? Handled.
Iran counters? Their cash-strapped economy—gutted by Trump’s pressure and proxy drain—limits moves.
Somalia yells? Qatar, Turkey join, but UAE-Saudi-Ethiopia wins. Egypt bristles? Somaliland’s far—Sinai’s closer; Suez cash trumps pride.
AU grumbles? Ethiopia, South Sudan precedent mute it. Solo or not, Israel’s foes stay foes, friends stay friends.
Against the Grain
Risks: Clan tensions over a top-down deal or Israeli presence could flare—Israel counters with clan outreach (wells, jobs). Postwar fatigue might sap will—Gaza/Lebanon could lag. UAE or U.S. bases might cover most needs with less hassle. Somaliland’s edge; strategic location, and autonomy still wins
.
The Win
Israel gets a Red Sea spearhead. Saudi Arabia, UAE get safer trade, weaker foes. Somaliland gets recognition, growth. The coalition, or Israel’s guts, flips the Horn, burying Houthi-Iran-piracy chaos and checking China. Postwar’s the moment; Somaliland’s the spot.
Call Riyadh and Abu Dhabi now, get them onboard!
BREAKING: All 22 people on board a UN chartered plane are safe after nose gear failed to deploy while landing at Mogadishu airport, officials. The plane travelled from Baidoa, southwest region, Tuesday.

Somalia’s stability is crucial for maritime trade & counterterrorism. Despite progress, fragility persists. The @_AfricanUnion has deployed several missions in the country but the latest one, AUSSOM, is already at risks warns @Ross_Marangio.
