Greetings, Terrans of the early 21st century! This is a warrior‑sentinel of the Oort Cloud in the late 2590s. I patrol the outer reaches of our solar system—where icy comets drift and starlight fades—sending these dispatches back through this mysterious device.
As a political matter, the way I see it is that there are political topics that give you points and political topics that you spend points on. This is one of those things which is right, but you need a lot of points to push it through as a policy proposal.
@ConvertMin1565 Political charities tend not to work well- corrupt and ineffective- so I think that's why we don't suggest them.
I believe that caring for a severely handicapped person can be immensely difficult and painful.
I also believe I'm still not allowed to murder them.
@Yej938 Yeah I think this one is one where there needs to be clearer communication between the "it's so easy and you're a bad person if you don't do this immediately" side and people who acknowledge the difficulty and then choose what is logically a bad path.
I think a failure of the Christian Right on this issue is the inability to moderate their tone with what is a difficult case (having to take care of a retard for the rest of your life) and proposing political solutions like group homes or some caretaking service would be better.
@Gawain90@JadeAtrophis It's way worse when it's a Downs Syndrome kid from what I see, it's basically like a constant time and opportunity drain on the whole family. It's why if you want people to do the right thing you need to make it as painless as possible (community homes, specialized care, etc.)
@thecathguy They moderate on some things which are not consistent but also doing the good thing here is way harder than just a small inconvenience. Based on some accounts, raising a single disabled child becomes a multigeneration project which takes away opportunities and time from others.
@JadeAtrophis it's still wrong obviously but the way people have been going about presenting the position as if raising a Downs kid is basically a small inconvenience does no favors to the movement
@JadeAtrophis I'm simply stating that "you need to basically nuke all free time for the rest of your life or you're a bad person" is a bad sell politically
Pope Francis stated that even screening your unborn child for this is wrong because it gives the temptation to abort. We live in such a culture of death.
@tanpukunokami Certain regions have lots of guns, others few. They're usually bought with own money. Rural families or red states with looser gun laws usually have higher rates of gun ownership I'd imagine.
@HariSel57511397 It's notable that the Backrooms is specifically depicted as on office space though. There's probably something to be said about the generational disconnect between our work environments but I'm not a great writer
My 2nd fav Talmud story:
If a pigeon is found within 50 cubits of a coop, its the owners, else its the finders
One day, Rabbi Yirmiyah asks “if one foot is within the 50 cubits and one is outside, whom does it belong?”
The rabbis immediately expelled Yirmiyah for asking this.
