Fren; Nobody turned traitor, the “union”, as you call it, had become something they didn’t sign up for, so they severed ties. Find something in the constitution that says they can’t do that. The supreme court decided in 1869 that because the constitution didn’t provide an orderly route of secession states could not unilaterally leave the union. That’s the opinion of lawyers, so it is now the law of the land, but it wasn’t then and I don’t think that it would pass the sniff test before a court of truly constitutionalist lawyers. The founders may not have provided for an orderly way to leave the union, but they certainly did say that anything not constitutionally reserved explicitly for the federal government belongs to the purview of the state. And slavery had precious little to do with any decision Lincoln made. Slavery was, and still is, a filthy disgusting practice and I pray that one day the world is truly rid of it. But Lincoln sacrificed more than 600,000 of his countryman to prevent another failure on his record. Period.
